My Foot Chose Violence — Part 2: Pain, Hope, and a Return Label

A Gen X Body Survival Series (#2)

If you read Part 1, you already know my foot officially declared war on me — plantar fasciitis, arch pain, hobbling, and the realization that maybe sitting for 8+ hours a day isn’t doing my Gen X body any favors.

So here’s Part 2 of the survival story.

And yes… there was a return label involved.

When the Expensive Option Isn’t the Better Option

I returned the Comfier 2-in-1 Shiatsu foot and calf massager. On paper, it sounded perfect. High-end features. Extra functions. Supposed to be the “upgrade.” But here’s the truth: it didn’t hit the areas of my feet that actually hurt.

If you deal with plantar fasciitis, you know exactly what I mean — that deep arch pain that feels like you’re stepping on glass first thing in the morning. The pressure wasn’t strong enough where I needed it most, and it pinched my toes instead of helping my arches.

So back it went. Lesson number one in this Gen X survival journey:

👉 Expensive doesn’t always mean effective.

The Simple Foot Massager That Actually Worked

Next, I tried a more basic Comfier foot massage. Less fancy. Much easier on the wallet.

And honestly? Way better. This one hits the sides of my feet much stronger and really works through what feels like fascia adhesions — that tight, stubborn tension that makes walking painful.

I keep it under my desk and use it 2–3 times per day while working from home.

After just one week:

  • Less hobbling
  • Less stiffness
  • More comfortable walking overall

And that’s saying something.

Real Life Happens (Because Gen X Doesn’t Get Sick Days from Life)

Of course, just as I started seeing improvement, I caught whatever virus has been making the rounds.

No energy. Completely wiped out. The foot massager sat unused for over a week. I have been using for the past week. So even with that interruption, I could still tell this lower-cost model worked better for me than the more expensive version in 7 days.

Again — simple wins.

Plot Twist: It Wasn’t Just My Feet

Here’s something I didn’t expect. As I started paying attention to my movement and pain patterns, I realized my hips were incredibly tight. Like… “why does a gentle touch feel aggressive?” tight.

So I added:

  • Lacrosse ball rolling
  • Targeted stretching before bed
  • More intentional mobility work

And I dusted off an old Shiatsu massager I received about 10 years ago. I’ve always used it for my neck and lower back, but recently started using it on my hips and glutes.

The difference?

Walking upstairs feels easier. Less pain when pushing off. Less strain overall.

Turns out, sometimes the pain isn’t just where you feel it.

The Reality of Working From Home (and Sitting Too Much)

Let’s be honest — sitting all day doesn’t exactly qualify as active living.

When you work from home, movement doesn’t happen automatically. It has to be intentional.

Consistency is the real game changer.

Small daily habits:

  • Stretching
  • Mobility work
  • Foot massage
  • Standing breaks

It’s not glamorous… but it works.

The Gen X Body Survival Philosophy

I’m not trying to turn back time. I’m just trying to move without pain and keep doing the things I love.

Gen X doesn’t grow old. We grow better.

And we definitely don’t pretend everything is fine when it’s not.

One step closer to pain-free living.
